Hello All,

The owl is a magical bird. Seldom seen by most, but when discovered, they instil a profound excitement that most creatures in nature can’t compete with. The 2013 season has been filled with glimpses of numerous northern birds, allowing many a once-in-a-lifetime chance to view these rare visitors out in the wild.

For myself, this winter has been a milestone. In terms of numbers, I was fortunate and blessed to spend time with seven Great Gray Owls, one Northern Hawk Owl, three Snowy Owls, two Great Horned Owls, and two Barred Owls. For the majority of these interactions I was alone with the bird – to watch with amazement as it silently (and successfully) hunted, preened, protected its territory, and interacted with the environment. These experiences saw me travel throughout Ottawa, Kingston, and Algonquin Provincial Park.

These moments in time I captured with my camera are special. Each tell a story. In total I took over 5,700 images. The following are those I am most proud of.

Hello Folks,

I was both fortunate and honoured to spend yesterday afternoon photographing four Great Gray owls just fifteen minutes from my home, here in Ottawa, Ontario. The Great Gray – commonly called the Phantom of the North – is a rare visitor to southern and eastern Ontario, with a home range and breeding ground in the northern Boreal forests.

Every four or five years these “ghost-like” birds move southward – usually en masse – typically in search of food. 2012/2013 is the year they have made an appearance once again, although not in as great numbers as one of the largest irruptions, occurring in 2004/2005. Many years not a single bird is spotted, so to spend time with one – let alone four – is truly a rare treat.

In terms of length, the Great Gray owl is the largest owl in North America, ranging from 24 to 33 inches. The wingspan can exceed 60 inches. Much of its size is deceptive, since this species’ fluffy feathers, large head and the longest tail of any extant owl obscure a body lighter than that of most other large owls.

Great Gray owls are very tolerant of daylight and have a relaxed attitude around humans, making them a wonderful photo subject if you are lucky enough to find one.

Hello Folks,

It has been an exciting fall and winter this year following whitetail deer bucks with the camera. I was privy to some up-close behaviour, including rituals of the rut (fights, chases, scrapes and rubs) as well as following the progression of a handful of deer that I would routinely see on my hikes.

I have already found three fresh antlers, so shed hunting is now ready to begin. Always a fun time!

Here are some of my favourite images from the last few months. I hope you enjoy.

Hello All,

My time in the field over the past month or so has been an enjoyable one. Photographing deer is a passion of mine, and as the leaves change colour each season, capturing the big bucks of fall and their fully formed antlers is always a definite highlight.

I have been fortunate to have crossed paths with some impressive – and very photogenic - deer so far. From spike four-pointers to a monster eleven-point “king-of-the-woods”, each animal never fails to elicit a sense of wonderment and unmatched excitement.

The following images showcase a sample to this point. With the rut at peak, capturing some buck and doe displays or combatant buck interactions is next on the agenda.

Justin

Hello All,

I have been fortunate to spend some time this fall doing photography within Algonquin Provincial Park. Although capturing moose with the camera is generally the goal, this past week offered a completely different opportunity, and one that was quite special.

While driving the truck along a dirt road miles from the main Highway 60 corridor, I came across a red fox. Grabbing the camera I expected this to be a fleeting moment, however, as I exited my vehicle the fox actually approached me. For the next 15 minutes it posed happily at the edge of the road, while I sat some 15 feet away. It was then that a second fox crept up behind me, his reflection giving his presence away in my camera screen.

The next hour was a magical one, with both red foxes playing, posing and interacting with me as I kept the camera shutter going. At one point, fox #2 fell into a deep slumber no more than five feet from me while I sat on the grass in awe.

Talking to a Park Warden later about my experience, I learned that a number of red foxes were born in and around camp sites throughout the park, and have become quite tame and tolerant of people. I am certain these are two of them. I feel fortunate and lucky to have found them, to watch their behaviours, mannerisms, and interactions with each other in such a close and intimate setting.

The following are a few of more than 400 images I shot that day.

Enjoy the Outdoors,

Justin

Hello All,

I had the fortunate luck to travel throughout the east coast of Canada and the United States these past two-and-a-half weeks. As was planned, spending four days exploring Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia and more specifically, the Cabot Trail, gave me the opportunity to hike many of the trails and photograph moose.

During my time, I was lucky to cross paths with eight diffent moose, including three bulls, four cows, and one calf. All were spotted on the Skyline Trail and most during the early morning or late afternoon hours.

Moose are a wondeful animal to shoot with the camera. Not only are they massive in size, they are also very charismatic in posture, often leading to striking images.

The following is a selection of my favourite images from the various shoots…

Will be definitely heading back again next fall…to walk with these giant creatures of the forest.

Justin

Hello All,

With summer fading fast and September on the horizon, the big bucks are beginning to show off their impressive head gear. I am fortunate to have a protected place to shoot photographs a mere ten minutes from my home and the deer I began shooting this past spring have certainly grown and matured.

Tricky thing about these big guys. They come out to the bean field late in the evening, which is not the best for shooting images. And, when the really good shots become available, the light has faded too far.

I will be following this herd over the next few months and hope to share some rutting and mating behaviour. The best is definitely yet to come!

Justin
