Hello Folks,
It has been an exciting fall and winter this year following whitetail deer bucks with the camera. I was privy to some up-close behaviour, including rituals of the rut (fights, chases, scrapes and rubs) as well as following the progression of a handful of deer that I would routinely see on my hikes.
I have already found three fresh antlers, so shed hunting is now ready to begin. Always a fun time!
Here are some of my favourite images from the last few months. I hope you enjoy.
Enjoy the Outdoors,
Justin

Excellent, as usual! My favourite was the second one because the colouration of the tail is so beautiful. I have to confess I laughed at the second last one because the ears resemble movie stars’ glasses! The lucky recipients of one of your calendars for Christmas are really happy with it. They are from this area but living in Nova Scotia. Cheers – keep enjoying your work. Ruth
Thanks for the kind comments as always, Ruth! I am torn between the first and second. The first has some significance, as he is “lip curling” as a doe just crossed his path. This was at the height of the rut. Glad to hear the recipients enjoyed their calendars – and thanks so much for the little gift you sent my way. I’ve already begun filling in the dates.
All the best, Ruth…
Cheers,
Justin
Nice images of the bucks. I work with a farm that raises deer and they have some prized sized bucks. Nothing beats seeing the wild ones in the fields though. I shoot a lot of wildlife and your images are wonderful.
Thanks for the kind comments. Yes, I am fairly fortunate where I live to have access to a good population of wild deer. Nothing better than seeing them up close and personal!
THANKS Justin for these lovely whitetail “shots”,.I never thought I would have the privilege of seeing so many big bucks right from the warmth of my own home. I must say this is actually more rewarding than hunting them & shooting them as I used to .Whitetail deer have always been my favourite big game animal.Congratulations on your excellent photography ! Something I would also like to pursue myself. I am glad I discovered your site just today…so I subscribed! Keep up the good work & enjoy it as much as I am.. Another lover of the great outdoors & Gods creation !! George in Manitoba …..
Thanks for subscribing, George – and I greatly appreciate your kind comments. Look for plenty more photography in the coming months!
Hi Justin…As you probably know sheds can be a real problem for the farmer here, when they drive over them in the field & puncture their tires.Deer come right into our town and I found one in our campground.Another time I was walking in our cemetery and found two sheds[a pair] together right by a gravestone. One hunting season my hunting buddy [ from Ontario ] found a nice big shed, then the next year I found another big one which was actually the mate,,so my friend said..” Next year when I come I will bring you mine so you can have a pair & mount them on a shield. A real nice “trophy” & I never fired a shot..Lots of good memories..Thanks for listening & have fun as you keep ” hunting ” All for now…another “happy hunter ” George.
